Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of dental irregularities such as crooked, crowded, protruding teeth and poor jaw alignment. Its aim is to produce a healthy, functional bite, and improving personal appearance. Orthodontists can also help you maintain a good bite so you could chew and speak comfortably.
The name comes from a Greek word that literally means “to straighten teeth”.
Orthodontic treatment may also be carried out in partnership with your dentist to correct the position of teeth before provision of dental restorations such as implants or crowns and bridges.
With the improved appearance of modern cosmetic braces, an increasing number of adults are choosing orthodontic treatment. Cosmetic appliances, which are less conspicuous, RE available and include clear (tooth coloured) fixed appliances, “invisible” removable aligners, or completely “invisible” or “hidden” (lingual) appliances.
Recent innovations have led to the development of low friction braces (e.g.Damon and Invisalign) that can align the teeth more quickly, comfortably and usually without the need for extractions, even when there is a severe crowding problem. These braces are available for both adults and children.
Our specialist Orthodontists using latest technological advancements can help straighten teeth and correct the alignment of the jaws – thus enhancing your oral health, your overall appearance and your self-esteem.
Most of the time, having crooked teeth or a malocclusion (bad bite) can be traced to genetics. Tooth and jaw problems could also be a result of accidents, cavities, premature loss of baby teeth and certain habits like thumb sucking. Below are examples of some common orthodontic problems in teens and adults. If you think you have one of these orthodontic problems, make an appointment to see an orthodontist to find out how the problem can be corrected.
A smile is often the first thing people notice. And while you may think you know a great smile when you see it, did you know that quite a number of factors go into making a perfect, beautiful smile?
Here is the science behind a great smile
Orthodontic Problem
Description
Full smiles display more teeth and have minimal dark space at the corners.
Teeth should not tip inward or flare outward. The teeth should sit perfectly upright within the mouth.
An ideal smile shows minimal gingiva (“gums”)
Early orthodontic intervention and it’s benefits
Did you know most common orthodontic problems such as crowding of the teeth, gaps, protruding teeth, and bad bites can be inherited or caused by injury to the mouth, early or late loss of baby teeth, or thumb-sucking habits?
This is where parents can help spot the signs of kids needing orthodontic care, by keeping an eye on the health of your child’s teeth. An orthodontist can help you look out for any problems that might benefit from early orthodontic intervention.Braces are often associated with teens, so you might be surprised to hear that children as young as nine can benefit from early orthodontic treatment. Most children lose all their baby teeth by age 9 or 10. By the end of their 13th year, the jaw bones will harden. Early orthodontic intervention can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.
Traditionally, it was recommended to wait for all the baby teeth to fall out and all the permanent teeth to come in before seeing an orthodontist for the first time. However, now in this advanced dental era, we would consider this approach as case of missed opportunities. Delaying treatment until adolescence increases the incidence of extraction of permanent teeth because, as the bones became more rigid and growth is ceased, the window of opportunity for expansion or growth modification is closed. Many correctable habits or skeletal mismatches were allowed to continue, while earlier intervention could have led to a more stable, and less invasive correction.
Once your child turns 7, it is best advised to visit either a general dentist or an orthodontist for your child’s orthodontic evaluation. If your family dentist thinks your child needs orthodontic work, they’ll refer you to a specialist orthodontist. An Orthodontist would treat a patient in a holistic way, ensuring the most accurate diagnosis and treatment that is best suited to your child’s unique need. Specialist orthodontists are also much more efficient at achieving amazing results because they see thousands of cases each year. Chances are they’ve seen a handful of cases just like yours and know exactly how to get the best results. It also good to know that an orthodontist has many tools that suits best for your situation and can bring change to an existing treatment plan depending on how the teeth respond.
How early orthodontic evaluation can help?
While it’s never too late to pursue orthodontic treatment and there are many advantages of getting an early of evaluation for child’s orthodontic needs.
Help your child achieve a beautiful smile that will last a lifetime, by starting early orthodontic treatment to achieve the best possible outcome for your child. Early diagnosis and correction of certain problems can make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated.
It’s advisable to get an orthodontic evaluation by the time a child is 7 years old. The best time for your child to get dental braces depends on the severity and the cause of the misalignment of your child’s teeth.
Traditionally, treatment with dental braces begins when a child has lost most of his or her baby (primary) teeth, and a majority of his or her adult (permanent) teeth have grown in — usually between the ages of 8 and 14.

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that is useful for teenagers and adults alike.
Orthodontics science has advanced greatly over the last 15 years making it possible for people of any age to benefit from the advantages of properly aligned set of teeth. Traditionally orthodontic treatment used metal braces to move the teeth into their desired spot. However, with the advent of Invisalign, the orthodontic treatments have been completely revamped. Invisalign treatment involves using a series of invisible or clear invisible trays that potential patients are required to wear over a period of 12-18 months to re-align teeth into their desired location.
Invisalign works on a wide spectrum of orthodontic problems from simple to complex cases. It works brilliantly on broad range of crowding, spacing, open bite, deep bite, narrow arches, posterior crossbite, anterior crossbite, extraction among a few to name. Invisalign uses a patented thermoplastic design, to help move your teeth to give it optimum placement with the controlled pressure. What’s more is that it perfectly suitable to accommodate any kind of lifestyle as it has minimal impact on your everyday life.
The process starts with your orthodontist evaluating your case, understanding your specific requirement and checking your eligibility for the treatment. Once the kind of treatment required is determined, your will take your 3D impressions and draw out a comprehensive treatment plan for you. This 3D impression is fed into the Invisalign system online and is sent back to the Invisalign labs. Invisalign would then custom create clear aligners with their proprietary SmartTrackmore ® material for controlled tooth movement. Once your dentist is happy with the fitting of the initial aligner, then you shall continue to receive new pair of Invisalign aligners every 2 weeks. Patients are required to come in for routine check-up only once in every 6-8 weeks to ensure that the treatment is on-track. It takes typically 12-18 months for patients to get the desired outcome.
However, one major drawback that Invisalign has over metal braces is the fact that if you are opting for Invisalign treatment then you must comply to wear them for the recommended 22 hours/day, else this would cause a delay in your treatment duration. The outcome of the treatment solely depends on the patient’s compliance to the treatment which was never an issue with metal braces as they could not be removed. Having said this, all my patients who have used Invisalign have found Invisalign supremely comfortable and found it easy to maintain the mandatory 22 hours/day compliance. If you too believe like me that straight and healthy teeth can never go out of fashion, then I would highly recommend to any adult considering orthodontic treatment to look no further and choose Invisalign for beautiful, straight smile that will grow your self-confidence.
Damon braces are self-ligating appliances that are fitted in the same way as traditional metal braces. But instead of having brackets that tighten and adjust the braces regularly, Damon braces use a slide mechanism that attaches wires to brackets to move naturally with the teeth as they realign. This makes them more comfortable, better looking and able to provide strong results in a shorter time.
These braces use a different method for moving teeth into the right position. The braces are attached to memory wire that connects slide brackets without the pressure that traditional elastics often produce. They are then set to move your teeth gradually, tightening over time. The process uses less force than traditional braces, which often require supplemental treatment through tooth extractions and palatal expanders.
Damon braces have a number of benefits over traditional braces. These include:
Their clear brackets make them more aesthetically pleasing because they are virtually invisible.
Faster treatment time. A comparative study showed patients finished their treatment 7.2 months earlier than those with traditional braces.
Less in-office maintenance. The study showed patients needed nearly half as many appointments to have the appliances adjusted manually.
Less pressure on the teeth, resulting in less pain. Patients reported 60 percent less discomfort with Damon braces.
Less friction, which avoids erosion and deterioration of the teeth.
Damon Braces are available in metal and clear formats
Traditional braces are effective at treating extreme overcrowding and are less expensive than other options like Damon braces or Invisalign aligners. They give your orthodontist the control he needs to move the teeth in small increments at a time. The main disadvantage of traditional braces is the metal mouth appearance. While less noticeable orthodontics like Invisalign may seem like a better choice for those who are conscious of their appearance, today’s braces are more visually appealing than in past years, with a range of color options for both the brackets and the elastics. Wearing these types of braces also means that you don’t have to worry about ever misplacing your aligners.
